5 .Oil Spill: Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology (CMLRE) leads an urgent ocean study following hazardous cargo spill south off Kochi

A significant cargo spill has occurred in the South Kochi sea after the Liberian-flagged cargo ship MSC ELSA 3 sank on May 25, 2025. The vessel, carrying hundreds of containers including some with hazardous materials like calcium carbide, and approximately 450 tonnes of oil, caused an oil spill that the Indian Coast Guard is actively containing.

Many containers and plastic pellets (nurdles) have washed ashore along the Kerala and Tamil Nadu coasts, raising serious environmental concerns about marine life and local livelihoods due to potential toxic leaks.

The Kerala government has declared it a state-specific disaster, and a scientific study is underway to assess the full impact. Public warnings have been issued to avoid approaching any washed-up debris.

6 .Ladakh Official Languages Regulation 2025,: The President of India has promulgated the Ladakh Official Languages Regulation, 2025, marking a significant development for the Union Territory.

This regulation formally declares English, Hindi, Urdu, Bhoti, and Purgi as the official languages of Ladakh.
