General Studies - III: Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management

General Studies - II: International Relations

President-elect Donald Trump recently declared plans for significant tariff increases on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China, set to commence on his administration's first day.

These measures aim to address concerns over illegal immigration, crime, and drug trafficking. Trump stated that a 25% tariff would be imposed on goods from Mexico and Canada, remaining in place until issues such as fentanyl trafficking and illegal border crossings are resolved.

Similarly, Chinese imports would face a 10% tariff increase unless China curbs the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S.

In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum argued that tariffs are not a solution to migration or drug issues, warning of potential retaliatory actions harming shared industries. Canadian leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, emphasized continued dialogue with the U.S. to address border and trade concerns.

Meanwhile, China's government refuted allegations of facilitating drug trafficking and highlighted the mutual benefits of U.S.-China trade relations.

Economists predict that these tariffs could disrupt supply chains, increase costs for American consumers, and slow economic growth, particularly if retaliatory trade measures are enacted. Critics argue that tariffs often result in higher consumer prices, as import taxes are typically passed on to buyers.

Despite these concerns, Trump has indicated plans for broader tariff policies, including a potential 60% tariff on all Chinese goods, as part of his strategy to bolster domestic manufacturing and address trade imbalances.
