Ethanol (C₂H₅OH), also known as ethyl alcohol, is a colorless, flammable liquid commonly used as a biofuel, industrial solvent, and alcoholic beverage component. It is produced primarily by fermentation of sugars by yeast or through petrochemical processes like ethylene hydration.
Here are some key points about ethanol:
Fuel: Ethanol is used as a renewable fuel or fuel additive, particularly in gasoline (e.g., E10 contains 10% ethanol, while E85 contains 85% ethanol). It helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels.
Alcohol: As the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, ethanol is responsible for intoxication. It's produced by fermenting sugars found in fruits and grains.
Production: Ethanol is often made by fermenting sugar sources, such as corn, sugarcane, or other biomass. Brazil and the United States are major ethanol producers, with Brazil relying on sugarcane and the U.S. on corn.
Uses:
Biofuel: Used in internal combustion engines, it burns cleaner than fossil fuels.
Solvent: In industries, ethanol is used in the production of personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and chemical reactions.
Antiseptic: Ethanol is commonly found in hand sanitizers and disinfectants due to its antimicrobial properties.
Environmental Impact: Ethanol as a biofuel is considered more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels, but the production process, especially from food crops, has sparked debates about land use and food security.
