1 .Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease: are inherited blood disorders centered around hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells, yet their fundamental mechanisms diverge.

Thalassemia encompasses a group of conditions characterized by a reduced production of normal alpha or beta globin chains, leading to fewer healthy red blood cells and consequent anemia.

ree

In contrast, Sickle Cell Disease involves the production of an abnormal form of hemoglobin, known as hemoglobin S, which causes red blood cells to become rigid, sticky, and assume a characteristic sickle shape.

While thalassemia's primary impact stems from an insufficient quantity of functional hemoglobin, sickle cell disease's complications arise from the misshapen red blood cells obstructing blood flow and causing a cascade of issues, including pain crises and organ damage.

Though distinct in their pathophysiology, both are typically inherited in an autosomal recessive manner and are more prevalent in specific populations; notably, thalassemia in those of Mediterranean, Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, and African descent, and sickle cell disease predominantly in individuals of African ancestry.

2 .The National Zero Measles-Rubella Elimination Campaign 2025-26 is a nationwide initiative launched by the Indian government, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with the ambitious goal of eliminating measles and rubella from the country by the year 2026.

This campaign, inaugurated during World Immunization Week (April 24-30, 2025), aims to achieve 100% immunization coverage for all eligible children by administering two doses of the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine, provided free of cost under the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP).

Measles and rubella are highly contagious viral diseases that can lead to severe complications and even death, making their elimination a significant public health priority.

The campaign will employ several strategies to achieve its objectives, including active disease surveillance through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP),

extensive community mobilization involving local leaders and media, targeted outreach in vulnerable populations like urban slums and migratory zones, and a rapid, urgency-driven implementation approach termed 'ACT NOW'.

India has already made notable progress in this direction, with a significant decline in reported measles (73%) and rubella (17%) cases in 2024 compared to the previous year.

Furthermore, many districts across the country have reported zero cases of these diseases in the early months of 2025. The campaign emphasizes the importance of achieving and sustaining over 95% vaccination coverage in all districts to build community immunity.

It also focuses on strengthening surveillance systems and ensuring preparedness for and timely response to any potential outbreaks. Community involvement and awareness are crucial components, with a call for participation from local leaders and sustained public education to overcome vaccine hesitancy.

The U-WIN digital platform is being utilized to streamline vaccination processes, record data, and generate certificates.

3 .The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is an independent statutory body established in 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act. Its primary role is to protect and promote human rights, including investigating violations, recommending corrective measures, and raising awareness.

ree

The NHRC can inquire into complaints of rights abuses by public authorities and suggest legal actions or policy reforms. It also collaborates with NGOs and international organizations to uphold human rights standards.

4 .The Simla Agreement was signed between India and Pakistan on July 2, 1972, following the 1971 Indo-Pak War that led to the creation of Bangladesh. The agreement, negotiated in Shimla by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi (India) and President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (Pakistan), aimed to establish peaceful relations. Key provisions included:

  • Respecting the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu & Kashmir.

  • Resolving disputes bilaterally without third-party intervention.

  • Promoting people-to-people exchanges.Despite the agreement, tensions persisted, but it remains a foundational document for Indo-Pak diplomacy.

5 .India has achieved a significant breakthrough in gene therapy for Hemophilia, marking a new era in the treatment of this genetic blood disorder.

The country's first human gene therapy trial for hemophilia was a collaborative effort between the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council's Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (BRIC-inStem) in Bengaluru and CMC Vellore.

The gene therapy trial involved the use of a lentiviral vector to introduce a functional Factor VIII gene into the patient's own hematopoietic stem cells.

These modified cells then produce the crucial Factor VIII protein needed for blood clotting, effectively addressing the deficiency that causes hemophilia A.

The initial results from the trial, conducted on a small group of individuals with severe Hemophilia A, have been very promising, showing a significant reduction or complete cessation of bleeding episodes and the sustained production of Factor VIII, thus eliminating the need for frequent and costly infusions of clotting factors.

ree

This development is particularly significant for India, which carries the world's second-largest burden of hemophilia cases. Current treatments, involving regular factor replacement therapy, can be expensive and pose challenges related to venous access, especially in children, and patient compliance.
