(General Studies-III (250 marks)Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management)
targets the burgeoning threat of "Digital Arrest" scams orchestrated by transnational cybercrime syndicates.
These fraudulent schemes involve impersonating law enforcement and regulatory officials to deceive and extort money from unsuspecting victims.
The modus operandi typically involves contacting individuals under the false pretense of an ongoing investigation and a fabricated "digital arrest," psychologically manipulating them into transferring substantial sums for purported legal clearances.
A significant breakthrough in this operation occurred on April 15-16, 2025, with the arrest of four key individuals identified as the kingpins of such a racket, two each apprehended in Mumbai and Moradabad.
This action stemmed from a case initially registered in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, where a victim was defrauded of ₹7.67 crore over a three-month period. Following this lead, the CBI conducted coordinated searches across twelve locations spanning Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and West Bengal, yielding crucial evidence such as bank records and digital devices.
The arrested individuals have been remanded to police custody as the CBI intensifies its efforts to dismantle these cybercriminal networks and eradicate the menace of Digital Arrests.
