Air conditioners and refrigerators use various gases, primarily as refrigerants, to facilitate cooling. Over the years, the types of gases used have evolved due to environmental and health concerns.

Here are some of the common refrigerants and their harmful effects:

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)

Examples: R-11, R-12

Harmful Effects: CFCs are known to cause significant damage to the ozone layer, leading to increased UV radiation reaching the Earth. They have a high global warming potential (GWP), contributing to climate change.

Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs)

Examples: R-22

Harmful Effects: HCFCs are less damaging to the ozone layer compared to CFCs but still pose a threat. They also contribute to global warming.

Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)

Examples: R-134a, R-410A, R-404A

Harmful Effects: HFCs do not deplete the ozone layer but have a high GWP, contributing significantly to global warming. Efforts are being made to phase them down under international agreements like the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.

Hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs)

Examples: R-1234yf, R-1234ze

Harmful Effects: HFOs have a much lower GWP compared to HFCs and are considered to be more environmentally friendly. However, there are still some concerns about their long-term environmental impact and toxicity.

Natural Refrigerants

Examples: Ammonia (R-717), Carbon dioxide (R-744), Propane (R-290)

Ammonia: Toxic and can be harmful if leaked, but it has no ozone depletion potential (ODP) and very low GWP.

Carbon dioxide: Non-toxic and non-flammable, with no ODP and a very low GWP. However, it operates at higher pressures, which can pose engineering challenges.

Propane: Highly flammable but has no ODP and a very low GWP.

The shift towards using refrigerants with lower environmental impact is ongoing, driven by international agreements and regulations aimed at protecting the ozone layer and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
