The Quad, also known as the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, is an informal strategic forum consisting of four nations: Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. It was established in 2007 to promote a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

Key objectives of the Quad:

  • Free and open Indo-Pacific: The Quad aims to ensure a region free from coercion and intimidation, with respect for international law.

  • Economic prosperity: The Quad seeks to promote economic growth and development in the region, through trade, investment, and technology cooperation.

  • Counterterrorism: The group works together to combat terrorism and transnational crime.

Significance of the Quad:

  • Counterbalance to China: The Quad is often seen as a counterbalance to China's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

  • Enhanced cooperation: It has led to increased cooperation among the four nations in various areas, including defense, economics, and technology.

  • Promotion of democratic values: The Quad is committed to promoting democratic values and norms in the region.

Recent developments:

  • Quad Summits: The Quad has held several summits in recent years, including the first in-person summit in 2021 and the second in 2022.

  • Joint initiatives: The group has launched several joint initiatives, such as the Quad Vaccine Partnership and the Quad Infrastructure Initiative.
